Local Community

Local Community

If everyone lived a completely selfish existence, society would eventually implode. The human race survives because we are social creatures. We thrive when we work together for the greater good. There will always be self-serving people, but thankfully they are in a minority. Still, modern life does encourage us to be selfish, only concerned about our wants and needs. Luckily, philanthropy is still alive and well in the 21st century.

Community ties are no longer as strong as they used to be, and many people have no clue who their neighbours are. If this sounds like you, fear not because there are things you can do to give back to the local community and make a difference. One way to do this is by devoting your time. Here are a few suggestions.

Volunteer

Look for local projects where you can help. You don’t need any special skills, although practical skills are always useful. See if there is a homeless kitchen or food bank where you can volunteer for a couple of hours a week. If you prefer animals to humans, volunteer at a pet shelter instead. Animals are always grateful for a bit of love and affection.

Be Kind

Try and commit one act of kindness a day. This could be something as simple as letting an old person jump past you in the queue at the supermarket, or helping a neighbour unload their groceries. While such gestures are very small in the grand scheme of things, they might encourage others to do the same. Imagine if everyone did something kind once a day, wouldn’t the world be a better place?

Collect Litter

Litter is a blight on all communities. Parks, green spaces, and even suburban streets are often covered in discarded waste, plastic bottles, and junk. Get into the habit of taking an empty bag and litter picker with you on walks. Collect as much litter as you can and dispose of it in your general waste and recycling bins. The more people that do this, the less litter will be floating around. And if you spot anyone dropping litter, politely ask them to place it in the nearest bin.

Become a Foster Parent

Many children need a home, and the foster care system is always happy to have more foster parents. If your kids have grown up and left home, and you have time and resources to devote to helping children grow into well-adjusted adults, look at fostering opportunities with thefca.co.uk.

Help Out Local Charities

Big charities get lots of funding and support, but smaller local charities often struggle to survive. Anything you can do to support a small charity in your community will be much appreciated. From time and resources to helping out at fundraising events, it’s a great way to be a part of something important, support a cause that means something to you, and make new friends.

As you can see, there are many different ways to give back.
