Dharmendra pursued his education at Government Senior Secondary School in Lalton Kalan village, where his father served as the headmaster. At the age of 19, Dharmendra married Prakash Kaur in 1954, with whom he had two sons and two daughters. Following their separation, Dharmendra married actress Hema Malini on May 2, 1980, and they have two daughters together.
